Chris’s choice to construct and create using metal as his medium, is purposeful and significant, reflecting his desire to create using an essential material derived from the earth so that the competed sculpture suggests its origins were in nature. Chris is a perfectionist when it comes to hiding weld lines and smoothing out surface blemishes. Seamless and fluid, all Chris’s creations are imbued with an organic feel resulting from a deliberate absence of man-made welds and joins in order to revealing the true potential and beauty of the metal in art so flawless that they appear to be divine creations, without burrs, weld beads, grinding marks or evidence of tools of any sort: Just smooth, flawless surfaces.
Chris is fascinated by the process of discovering the parameters of the metal’s limitations and possibilities under his skilled touch. “I am always curious to discover, in something like a game, how far I can dictate the form of the sculpture, before the metal begins to answer me as to just how much it is willing to comply with my wishes.” From original concept to completed sculpture, each piece changes as he pushes the metal’s restrictions in conjunction with his own evolving point of view.
Just as Chris’s wishes for the metal are tempered by its own inherent nature, so he wishes the experience of the viewer to be: “All my pieces are non-representational, deliberately without definition so that everyone will see something different in my art. I want that subjective interpretation to be left to the viewer”.
