Maritsa Micos is a Sydney-based abstract expressionist artist whose dynamic mixed media works explore the emotional resonance of form, texture, and colour. Her practice is rooted in intuitive mark-making, layering materials such as acrylics, aerosol, gouache, ink, graphite, and collage to create richly textured compositions that evoke both energy and introspection. Influenced by artists like Willem de Kooning, Cy Twombly, and Aida Tomescu, Micos’s work deconstructs visual elements to reveal the underlying essence of her subjects.
Micos holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New South Wales and further honed her skills at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, where she participated in the Drawing Marathon under mentor Graham Nickson. This experience expanded her artistic vocabulary, encouraging the use of unorthodox tools and exercises that have become integral to her creative process.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including features at The Other Art Fair and the Antipodean Palette exhibition. Beyond her artistic practice, Micos is actively involved in the Greek-Australian cultural community, contributing to exhibitions and events that celebrate Hellenic heritage.
